Roughing It for New Years

algonquinwinter.jpgThere will be no fancy celebration for New Years this year; Rita and I are heading to Algonquin Park to snowshoe the interior instead. This is something I’ve been wanting to do and, this year, things have come together to make it so. We’ve got most of the gear we need (will be renting the snowshoes when we get there) and are ready to hit the open wilderness.

On Saturday, we headed up to Oakville to visit some family (that’s where we are right now) and will be heading out Sunday afternoon to Huntsville (30 minutes outside the park) after making a quick trip to the Mountain Equipment Co-op in Toronto. We’ll spend Sunday night resting up and making the final touches on our plan and will head out early Monday morning.

We’ll be snowshoeing into the interior, which means we won’t be staying at a regular campsite. Instead, we’ve brought a couple small shovels and will be making our own quinzee to sleep in (similar to an igloo). Most of our materials will be brought in on our backpacks, although we do have a small sled that we will be carrying along also.

quinzee.jpgWhy are we doing it? It’ll be an adventure! It’s a change from the usual New Years events and will give us a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise, spend quality time together, test our ability, and hopefully see some wildlife (including foxes, deer, moose, and wolves–the bears are hibernating). I’m pretty happy that the bears are in deep sleep and I’m hoping that if we do see a wolf, it will be from a far distance :-p.

The plan is to stay two nights and head back home on Wednesday. I’ll post pics and a story when we get back!

I live in Ireland and we don’t get much snow in this part of the world. One of my life’s ambitions is to do what you are doing now. I envy you but hope you have/had a great time. You never know- one year I may make it!
