Threat to US National Security!

noradclimate.jpgWhat just flashed through your mind–terrorists, nuclear bombs, illegal immigrants? Since this is what the mainstream media pushes as the threats to the American people, I don’t blame you if it was–really. However, while most people are fixated on things that are hyped up more than their actual threat warrants, the real threats to the US (and the rest of the world) continue to be pushed aside by governments.

Yesterday, the New York Times noted that three of NORAD’s 20 radar sites in northern Alaska are being disasembled–oh no, how are we going to see the Russian nukes on our radar screens just before they hit us now?. Okay, all joking aside, the reason these stations are being dismantled is because the land they were constructed on is literally crumbling away due to the effects of global warming. What used to be nice solid ground is eroding into a pile of mush. Although the CIA claims this won’t affect defence, it is just another sign that global warming is likely the most severe threat to security around the world, not just the US and Canada.

coastal_flooding_florida.jpgWhat will happen when coastal areas start filling up with water due to the melting of the ice caps? Picture New Orleans, but on a global coastal scale–bye-bye Florida, bye-bye New York City. How much will that threaten security? Forget fighting wars abroad, the US will be having wars at home, with its own people. I can hear the cries now, “Why didn’t you [the government] do anything to stop this?! Why were you focusing so much on useless issues when you knew this was predicted?!” How useful will SUVs be then–I don’t think they’ve conquered the whole submersible thing yet.

And, if you think this is some radical fantasy I’m conjuring up, don’t take my word for it. Do some research of your own and see what the scientists and scholars of the world are saying. These are all very likely scenarios if we keep heading down the path we’re on and most of the media sure isn’t going to tell you about it. If they did, the companies who buy advertising space and are the source of their revenue would be outraged. News companies are no longer there to report news, they are there to make a profit. They are owned by billion dollar corporations like General Electric (owns NBC)–I’m not sure I want to put too much trust in a newspaper or news channel owned by makers of lightbulbs. You can imagine that these major news sources are not going to promote views that risk losing advertising revenue. Therefore, they tend to focus heavily on stuff of little or no significance like sports, celebrities, and entertainment and claim it to be “news.” When they do cover world events, it is usually a washed out little article or segment with a bias based on their own interests. Fox is the prime example of this, and CNN is not much better.

britneyfoxnews.jpgAnyway, I went into a little more detail than planned. To summarize, the things that really pose threats to people are usually not given much attention by a media whose prime concern is profit. Instead, we focus on menial topics that don’t really matter, which leads to confusion and anger when something bad happens and we have no idea why (9/11 is proof of this–most people think it was a random act of violence when it was actually just the result of decades of fighting and oppression between the US and middle east). So, we need to ask, “what really matters?” And, if we don’t pay attention to those things that do matter, we’re going to find ourselves in a pretty screwed up situation in the future–more screwed up than we already are.
