Today I’m Ashamed to be a Canadian

harpercommonwealth.jpgI thought this was a feeling only felt by Americans, but today I am disappointed in my country–or perhaps more accurate, the government running it right now. Stephen Harper and the Conservative party are, well, idiots who are serving the interests of the oil companies and others profiting from a lack of action on climate change.

The Conservatives have taken us out of Kyoto and just yesterday killed attempts for consensus on binding greenhouse gas limits for all Commonwealth countries. The Commonwealth is a group of 53 sovereign countries, most of which were British colonies. This group came together this weekend to agree on binding emissions targets for all its members. With most European countries light years ahead of North America in terms of the environment, it was Canada that was to blame for holding the Commonwealth back on this agreement. Stephen Harper did not want to sign on and, therefore, the final agreement was watered down without any clear targets.

Harper’s justification is this: “We will not agree to a framework that binds some countries and not others because that is a recipe for failure on the issue of climate change,” he told reporters. “We already have a protocol like that and it doesn’t work. We need a protocol that involves everyone.”

What a positive attitude to have. Saying he wants a protocol that involves everyone is just a way of stalling and not doing anything since it is so obviously clear that no protocol will ever involve everyone. And, his statements are totally contradictory, saying that he won’t agree to a binding framework yet at the same time wanting to see a binding framework that involves all countries. He’s just dancing his way around the topic and it’s disgusting to watch as this is a guy who is a representative of my country.

Harper is to Canada as Bush is to the U.S. and it is giving Canada a bad image. I can only hope that things will change in the future. Shame on us.
