Well, I finally took the plunge and made an attempt at updating WordPress (my blogging platform), Gallery2 (my gallery platform) as well as the WPG2 plugin (which integrates the two). I don’t have a very good track record when it comes to doing these types of upgrades individually let alone all at once. However, I am extremely happy to say that the upgrades installed rather flawlessly (so far as I can tell) and have improved the functionality of this blog.
Much of the new features won’t be seen by the average visitor but on my end, things are much better. As for what you will notice, there are a couple of things. First, images in the gallery have all been resized. This solves two problems: 1) there was an issue in the Favourites album where some images were showing up way too large, the main cause isn’t really fixed, but a workaround is in place 2) images can no longer be downloaded in their original size (protecting copyright issues). The second thing you may notice is the introduction of Lightbox.
Lightbox is probably the best part of the upgrade. Now, when you click on images on the sidebar and some posts, you will get a nicely blown-up version of the image in java. Not only is this very sexy, but it also allows you to view a larger version of the image without going to a new page. Click the images below to see what I’m talking about. I am hoping to integrate this feature into the gallery as well.
As for other things I’m hoping to work on, I’ve noticed that my theme is causing a problem with internet explorer where the right sidebar is cutting into the posts in the middle of the page. If you use a smarter browser like Firefox, you wouldn’t have noticed this program but since IE is lame, I have to find out what is causing the problem and fix it.
Overall, the process was a success and I was able to go from WordPress 2.1.2 to 2.3, Gallery 2.1 to 2.2.3, and WPG2 2.1 to 3.0. Now, I better get some sleep before my class starts in 5.5 hours
