Useful Packaging Design

tv_packaging2.jpgWhen buying larger electronics, one typically gets stuck juggling large pieces of white Styrofoam packaging, which usually ends up in the garbage. Wouldn’t it be great if this bulk of material could be put to good use?

Designer Tom Ballhatchet did just this by turning the packaging for a big screen TV into a usable– and not half-bad looking–television stand. First, Ballhatchet scrapped the traditional idea of the box and enclosed the TV in a polypropylene casing with wheels. Not only does this make it easier to roll from the store to your car, but the wheels are also detachable and become part of the TV stand when you set it up at home. After unpacking the TV, the empty space inside the enclosure (where the TV was) is turned into shelf space that you can use for your DVD player, gaming system, etc.

Personally, I think this is a great idea and, as Gizmodo points out, since most entertainment stands these days are made out of “glorified cardboard” anyway, alternatives like this are nice to have. With most people throwing packaging in the garbage, why not attempt to make the stuff useful? What do you think?

Wow that’s a neat idea, especially in this day and age with an ever increasing amount of packaging. We try to recycle most of our cardboard etc. and it’s come to a point before we get to the dump where we are seriously tripping over the stuff.
